Presence / Absence Fairy Shrimp Surveys
Presence / Absence Fairy Shrimp Surveys
To perform protocol-level surveys compliant with the United States Fish & Wildlife Service's (USFWS) fairy shrimp presence-absence survey protocol, found in Survey Guidelines for Large Listed Branchiopods 2017, projects are required to either perform one wet season and one dry season survey, or two wet season surveys:
THEREFORE, YOUR PROJECT WILL NEED:
One Wet Season
&
One Dry Season
Recommended!
or
Two Wet Season
(not recommended)

Dry Season Surveys
Dry season surveys are cheaper, easier to budget and much easier to schedule than wet season surveys! The #1 reason firms do not perform dry season surveys is for lack of knowing a good, reliable lab with high capacity for processing the soil samples. Look no further! Learn more here about our dry season surveys and our services.
We recommend doing ONE round of dry season so that you only have to do ONE round of wet season surveys.

Wet Season Surveys
Wet season surveys are a bit tricky! According to protocol, they must commence when pools have enough water and continue until pools dry. If pools re-wet, guess what? You start surveying again! They are super fun for us biologists, but not as much fun for managers to budget and schedule. Costs can also run really high due to the uncertainty of the season and scheduling. We perform these surveys - you can learn more about wet season and our services offered here.
RELATED SERVICES
In addition to the actual sampling, both wet and dry, there are a few other items required by the USFWS for your project, include a report that is accepted by the agency and GIS figures.
USFWS
APPROVED REPORTING
After your wet and dry (or wet and wet) surveys you then have to prove that your work was done up to par for the USFWS, otherwise, they have a right to reject your work. Basically, your work is only as good as how well you can prove in writing.
Chez Brungraber of Ecological Soil Labs has a 100% reporting approval rate with the USFWS.

GIS
MAPS & FIGURES
All USFWS reports require maps that are more than you can just download from Google: they have specific requirements on the types of maps and resolution of such maps in order to accept your report. Ecological Soil Labs has extensive experience providing the required maps, so if you cannot make them, we can!
